As the snake-sacrifice rages, the serpent-king Vasuki sends his nephew Astika to stop it. Astika arrives, praises the king, and waits for the right moment. When Takshaka is finally drawn from Indra's protection into the fire, Astika demands his boon: the sacrifice must end, thus saving the snakes and fulfilling his destiny.
