The Curse of the Vasus and the Birth of Bhishma
Adi Parva
How will the cursed Vasus be born and fulfill their destiny on earth?
The eight Vasus are cursed to be born as mortals for stealing a sage's cow. Ganga agrees to be their mother and drown them at birth to free them, but spares the eighth, Dyaus (Bhishma), to live a long human life. The arc follows the fulfillment of this curse through the marriage of Shantanu and Ganga, the drowning of the seven sons, and the survival of Devavrata (Bhishma).
