A Divine Voice Validates Shakuntala and the Son
Shakuntala has finished her argument and turns to leave, with King Duhshanta still publicly denying her. Then a disembodied voice speaks from the sky, directly addressing the king and commanding him to accept his child. The divine intervention removes all doubt and forces Duhshanta's hand.
Shakuntala had said everything she could. She had argued from dharma (righteousness), from the cosmic witnesses, from the meaning of a wife. She had threatened and pleaded. Now, with Duhshanta still unmoved, she prepared to leave the court.
As she turned, a voice spoke from the empty sky.
It addressed Duhshanta directly, as he sat surrounded by his priests, preceptors, and ministers. The message was blunt and biological, stripping the argument down to its essential truth. “O Duhshanta! The mother is only a vessel for holding water. Born from the father, the son is the father himself.” The voice commanded him: support your son, do not reject Shakuntala. A son saves a man from Yama’s abode — the realm of death. “You are the creator of this embryo. Shakuntala has spoken the truth.”
It laid out the simple, inescapable logic: a wife gives birth by dividing her own body. Therefore, protect this son born from Shakuntala. To abandon one’s own son and continue to live is a great misfortune. The voice concluded with a prophecy: “Since you will maintain this son because of these words, this son will be known as Bharata.”
The king of the Puru lineage heard the words of those who dwell in the sky and was delighted. He immediately addressed his assembled court. “All of you have heard what the messenger of the gods has to say.” He then revealed his own reasoning: “I myself know very well that this is my son. But if I had accepted him today as my son on her words alone, there would have been suspicion among all the people and he would never have been considered to be pure.”
With the divine voice clearing all public suspicion, Duhshanta was extremely pleased. He accepted his son.
