Shalva Attacks Dvaraka in Revenge
Enraged by Shishupala's death at the rajasuya, Shalva rides the flying city Soubha to Dvaraka while Krishna is away. He slaughters Vrishni youth, burns the parks, and shouts abuse at the absent Krishna — swearing he will not return without killing him.
Shalva heard that Shishupala had been killed at Yudhishthira's rajasuya sacrifice. The killing had happened over the question of who should receive the first homage — and Krishna had done it. Shalva was filled with terrible rage.
He knew Krishna was still with Yudhishthira. Dvaraka would be empty of its protector.
Shalva ascended Soubha — a city that could go wherever it wished — and flew to Dvaraka. He found the city without Krishna. He fought the young bulls among the Vrishnis in cruel fashion. He slew many brave Vrishni youth. He destroyed all the parks in the city.
Then he shouted.
"Where is that wretch of the Vrishni lineage? Where has the evil-souled Vasudeva, son of Vasudeva, gone? He is desirous of doing battle and I will destroy his pride in battle. O Anartas! Tell me truthfully where he is, and I will go there. I will return after killing the slayer of Kamsa and Keshi. I truthfully swear on my weapons that I will not return without killing him."
He rushed around from one place to another, the lord of Soubha, searching for battle. He called Krishna mean and treacherous. He said Shishupala had been only a child, killed when he wasn't ready, not in proper battle. He swore he would kill Janardana.
Thus did he lament, and thus did he rage — alone in the city of his enemy, surrounded by the destruction he had already caused, demanding a battle that would not come that day. Aranyaka Parva, Chapter 312
