Pandavas Bathe in Vaitarani and See Worlds
The Pandavas and Draupadi descend into the Vaitarani river and offer oblations to their ancestors. When Yudhishthira emerges from the water, he finds that he has transcended the human — he can see all the worlds and hear the prayers of hermits three hundred thousand yojanas away.
The Pandavas, together with Draupadi, descended into the Vaitarani river. They offered oblations to their ancestors — the ritual gift of water and sesame that sustains the dead in the next world.
When Yudhishthira emerged from the water, he was changed.
He turned to Lomasha and said: "O Lomasha! O illustrious one! O one rich in austerities! Behold. As soon as I have bathed in this river, I have gone beyond what is human. Through your grace, I can see all the worlds. This is the sound of the great-souled hermits, as they recite their prayers."
The sound he had heard earlier — the chanting from three hundred thousand yojanas away — was now unmistakable. He could hear it clearly. He could see the worlds. The human condition had fallen away from him, if only for this moment, through the grace of the sage and the power of the river. Aranyaka Parva, Chapter 411
