Ravana defeats his elder brother Kubera in battle and seizes the Pushpaka vimana, the flying chariot that moves at the speed of thought. Kubera leaves Lanka for Gandhamadana, but before he goes, he speaks a curse: the vimana will not carry Ravana — it will carry the one who kills him.

Ravana had already won Lanka from Kubera in battle. The Pushpaka vimana — the great flying chariot that moved at the speed of thought, that could carry its passengers anywhere they wished — was now his. Kubera, the lord of riches, left the city he had ruled and went to Gandhamadana, followed by the gandharvas, the yakshas, the rakshasas, and the kimpurushas. But before he went, Kubera spoke. He was the elder brother. Ravana was the younger. And the younger had treated the elder with contempt — had fought him, defeated him, taken what was his. Kubera pronounced a curse: "This will not bear you. It will carry the one who will kill you in battle. Since you have treated your elder with contempt, you will soon perish." One brother followed Kubera. Vibhishana, with dharma in his soul, left Lanka and went after the lord of riches. Kubera was satisfied with his younger brother — the one who had chosen righteousness over power. He made Vibhishana the general of the armies of both the yakshas and the rakshasas. In Lanka, the rakshasas and pishachas assembled. They instated Dashanana — the ten-faced one — as their king. Dashagriva could assume any form at will and travel through the sky. Intoxicated with his strength, he attacked the daityas and the gods and robbed them of their jewels. He made the worlds scream. Because of that, he came to be known as Ravana.
