Gandhari

Dhritarashtra tells Vyasa that the gambling brought him no pleasure — that Bhishma, Drona, Vidura, and even Gandhari all disapproved. But he cannot abandon his son Duryodhana. Bound by affection and overcome by destiny, he confesses his helplessness to the sage.

With Skanda instated as general of the gods, Rudra departs for Bhadravata in a chariot yoked to a thousand lions, followed by a vast celestial procession — gods, yakshas, rishis, weapons, rivers, and the very branches of knowledge — establishing the new cosmic order.

At night's end, Karna approaches the dejected Duryodhana and speaks — praising his survival, his victory over the gandharvas, his extraordinary feat of freeing himself and his entourage. But the words, meant as comfort, only deepen the wound. Duryodhana lowers his head and answers in a voice choked with tears.

Seeing his army destroyed, Jayadratha frees Draupadi and flees into the forest. Yudhishthira orders Nakula to pick her up, and Bhima wants to slaughter the remaining soldiers — but Arjuna stops him. Bhima vows to kill Jayadratha even if he escapes to the nether regions. Yudhishthira objects, citing Duhshala and Gandhari. But Draupadi, angry and unashamed, demands the wretch's death.
