Astika arrives at the grounds of Janamejaya's snake sacrifice, a place of terrible power and radiant energy. But the gatekeepers bar the young Brahmin from entering. To gain admission, he begins to praise the sacrifice itself.

Astika went to the place where the sacrifice was being held. He saw the grounds laid out for the ritual — splendid, populated with numerous sadasyas (priestly officiants), as radiant as the sun and the sacrificial fire. It was a scene of immense power and terrible purpose. But the gatekeepers refused to allow the young Brahmin entry. To gain admission, Astika, the best of Brahmanas, began to praise the sacrifice.
