Svaha appears before Skanda and declares she is Daksha's daughter who has always desired Agni — but the fire god does not fully know her love. She asks Skanda to grant her eternal residence with Agni. Skanda decrees that henceforth every oblation offered through Agni will be rendered with the utterance of the word "svaha," ensuring she will always reside with him.

When Skanda had done all this — when he had received the gifts of the gods and taken his place on Mount Shveta — Svaha appeared before him. She came to please the mothers, and she came with a request. "You are the son born from my womb," she said. "I wish that you should give me happiness that is extremely difficult to obtain." Skanda asked her what kind of bliss she wished for. Svaha told him her story. "I am Daksha's beloved daughter and my name is Svaha. Ever since I was a child, I have always desired Agni. O son! But the fire does not completely know how much I love him. O son! I wish to reside eternally with Agni." She was asking for something that no ordinary request could grant. Agni was the fire that carried offerings between worlds — he belonged to every sacrifice, every ritual, every household that lit a flame. He could not simply belong to one woman. But Svaha had been part of this birth from the beginning: it was she who had received Uma, and through her the seed of Rudra had passed into the world. She was, in a sense, Skanda's mother. Skanda answered her. "O goddess! Whatever oblations are properly offered to gods and ancestors by brahmanas, with the recital of mantras and through Agni, will henceforth be rendered with the utterance of the word 'svaha.' O beautiful one! Thus, you will always reside with Agni." It was a solution that bound her to the fire itself. Every time a priest poured ghee into the flames and called out "svaha!" — every time an offering was made to the gods or to the ancestors — her name would be spoken. She would be present in every act of worship that passed through Agni's hands. She would never be separate from him again. Having been thus addressed and worshipped by Skanda, Svaha was satisfied. She was united with her husband Agni and offered homage to Skanda. From that moment, the word "svaha" became a permanent part of Vedic offerings — the ritual utterance that seals every oblation, spoken at the moment the offering touches the fire.
