As they approach the impregnable city, Krishna points out its five protective mountains and narrates its sacred history to Arjuna. He describes a land blessed by sages and serpents, a place where Jarasandha's pride has grown unchecked — a pride they have come to strike down.

Krishna pointed ahead. "O Partha! This is the great and beautiful city of Magadha. It is rich in cattle, always full of water, prosperous, free from disease, and filled with splendid mansions." He gestured toward the horizon where five large mountains stood guard. "Look there: the extensive Vaihara, Varaha, Vrishabha, Rishigiri, and the beautiful Chaitya. These five giant peaks, covered with trees that give cool shade, seem to collectively protect Girivraja." The mountains were concealed in a forest of fragrant lodhra trees, beloved by lovers, their branches tipped with blossoms. Krishna’s voice carried the weight of stories. "It was here that the great-souled sage Goutama, rigid in his vows, begot sons like Kakshivana on Ushinara’s shudra daughter. Because he lived here and because the kings here showed him homage, Goutama loved the Magadha lineage." He reminded Arjuna that once, powerful kings like Anga and Vanga had come to Goutama’s abode in this very place and found happiness. "Behold the beautiful array of priyala trees and the charming lodhras growing near Goutama’s abode," Krishna said. The land was also the home of powerful serpents — Arbuda and Shakravapi, who scorched their enemies, and the supreme serpent Mani. "Because of Mani," Krishna noted, "Magadha is never avoided by clouds. Koushika and Goutama have indeed extended their favours here." Then his tone shifted. "Jarasandha imagines that the success of his objectives will continue. But we are about to attack him, and today, his pride will be struck down."
